Critics gave a thumbs up to Black Widow

After a little over a year’s delay, Black Widow is coming to cinemas and Disney Plus for an extra price. The long-awaited film was to be the second film in Phase 4 of the mega-franchise, but due to the pandemic, it got overtaken by some TV series such as WandaVision, Loki, Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Nonetheless, critics gave a thumbs up to the latest instalment in the saga that finally tells a solo story of the heroine.

Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow is a prequel set years before Avengers: Endgame, where Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) died during the superheroes’ final mission. Instead, the story will take us on a solo mission she pursued to have a new version of the Black Widow programme, of which she was a victim and created an army of super spies. To stop this threat, she recruits former allies we didn’t know about and the family she had before joining SHIELD and, later, the Avengers.

Critics have already been able to see the film, and the reviews are mostly positive. The reviews speak of an impeccable job in editing the action scenes and their execution. They also highlight the pacing and, although not everyone thinks it has the strength of other solo adventures in the saga, they think it’s an excellent way to say goodbye to the heroine to whom, others believe, the franchise owed her a solo movie.

Does Black Widow do justice to the protagonist? Some critics believe there is a depth to her character that we haven’t seen before. Others lament that it’s the last we’ll see of her precisely because of it, and others believe that, as her first and last solo adventure, they fail the spy. However, what seems to be a common thread is that Johansson has an undeniable command of her role and manages to imbue it with a palpable emotion that helps the viewer feel more invested in her mission.

Black Widow will be in cinemas, where they are already open, from 9 July, and on the same day, you can rent it on Disney Plus for an extra cost in case you prefer to watch it from the safety of your own home with the whole family. Tell us how much you loved it in the comments!
